1509

1509

When people ask her how she started, she tells the truth, "I never wanted to smell like anyone else."

-Sophia Matthias

Sophia is a scent artist, the creator and designer behind 1509. The New York based pure fragrance -design company was inspired by her home address and began just over a year ago after Sophia moved from her beloved home in the canyons and amongst the trees of her native Los Angeles. Mixing natural oils and creating her own scents was something she always did for herself, a passionate habit she thought strange that started in her bedroom as a teenager. The theatre trained actor moved to New York for the stage and has found herself doing just that. 1509 is not just a company selling a product, it's an artist providing an experience for people. The New Museum recognized this and approached her to be a part of a temporary window installation, not anticipating she would also build a miniature studio for the project while she worked and interacted with the public. The second museum to display and carry 1509 will be in the center of Detroit's art scene at the MOCAD. The two scents are hand designed for either woman or man. Sophia puts incredible effort in her intricate packaging and presents her fragrances in a way that is nothing short of a performance. The growing interactions with people mean the most to her and the journey surrounding her scents is sincere, memorable and moving. Sophia's vision for 1509 is to create a platform for growth, while maintaining the integrity behind her hand-designed art. "My father is a German product designer and my mother is an Australian interior designer. Their taste is like no other, an effortless elegance. I have them to thank for inspiring me to surround my work and support the art with a distinctive environment, aesthitic, experience and way of life." From Los Angeles to New York and now Detroit, 1509 is found on display and sold in a select few locations. Sophia's personal relationship with her scents are a part of her life, therefore 1509 is dedicated for ways we all live.
