Jake Ziwich is a ceramic artist and instructor at Choplet Gallery and Studio in Williamsburg. Originally from Kingston, New York, Jake began studying ceramics in Vermont before moving to Brooklyn in 2010. He creates wheel-thrown and assembled functional pottery that reference a vast array of sources. His work seeks to introduce sculptural elements into utilitarian objects while maintaining functionality. Jake’s vessels are sensual and curvaceous begging the viewer to handle, turn and examine them. When asked about what inspired his solo show in March 2013, he replies, "My inspiration for design rarely comes from other pottery, so I often end up with objects that look a bit unusual. I got the idea for this series after watching a documentary on Myanmar, where I saw temples with these wonderful concentric-ring roofs. I was trying to make tea sets that were well-crafted, but I wasn't thinking about teapots. I was thinking about temples, so all of the shapes ended up looking very architectural."
